Back Pain Physio Northern Beaches

Back pain doesn’t care if you’re busy.

It can show up suddenly after lifting something awkwardly, reaching forward to pick up your child or creep in over time from with no specific incident, factors like stress, lack of sleep, inactivity and genetics all play a part. When you do get it, well, everything feels harder. Walking, sleeping, working, standing at the sink doing the dishes, chasing after the kids... It’s exhausting.

At Sports & Spines Physiotherapy in Brookvale, we work with people every day who are dealing with back pain.

Sometimes it’s a dull ache, sometimes it’s sharp and unpredictable, and sometimes it includes pain referring down your leg. Either way, our goal is the same: to help you move better, hurt less, and feel more in control of your body again.

What’s Causing My Back to Hurt?

Honestly, it depends. Back pain can be frustratingly vague at times, but these are some of the usual suspects:

  • Muscle or ligament strain (often from overdoing it or lifting wrong)
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Genetics – family history is a factor
  • Osteoarthritis or age-related degeneration
  • Stress and tension — we really do carry a lot in our backs

It is often not as simple as one thing but it is a mixture of a number. You might be tired, stressed and not very active then go to move a pot plant or pick your baby out of the crib and your back goes.

How We Treat Back Pain at Sports & Spines

Our first job is to listen. What’s been going on in your life? When and did it start? What movements make it better or worse? Once we’ve done a proper assessment, checking movement, muscle control and possibly neural involvement, we’ll tailor a plan to suit you. No cookie-cutter routines. No being left alone with a sheet of exercises and a resistance band. No gimmicky machines. All evidence based treatment that has been shown to work. We might use:

  • Hands-on manual therapy to release tight spots
  • Targeted strengthening exercises to support your spine
  • Mobility exercises to help free you up
  • Dry needling if there are trigger points slowing your progress
  • Advice and education (because understanding your pain helps reduce it)

And we’ll adapt as we go. Some people respond quickly, others need more time, it’s not a race.

What’s the Point of Physio for Back Pain?

It’s about more than just pain relief (although that’s a big part of it). A good physio plan can help you:

  • Regain flexibility and movement
  • Build strength where it matters
  • Learn how to move in ways that protect your spine
  • Get confident doing the things you’ve been avoiding whether that’s picking up the kids or going for a surf again

We don’t promise miracle cures. But we do aim for steady progress and long-term improvements, not just quick fixes.

You’re Not the First Or the Only One

We’ve seen tradies with seized-up backs, new mums trying to nurse with a lumbar support, weekend warriors who thought they could lift “just one more rep” and office workers who’ve been hunched over for too many years.

Pain is pain. We’re not here to judge, we’re here to help.
